Happy New Year, friends! New Year’s Eve always makes me a bit nostalgic for the year that is coming to a close − a time to reflect on the highs and lows and make predictions and set family goals for the new year.
I love that a new year is a fresh start − a chance to set new goals and dreams for the year ahead. Do you set resolutions? As I write this post, we’re on our ski vacation in Whistler which has been a much-needed chance to recharge and spend a lot of quality family time together. We have talked about resolutions or goals as a family and individually which we’re sharing below. Hopefully, writing them down will make us all more accountable.
family goals
- GRATITUDE: I was chatting with friends one evening in the late summer as we were transitioning to the start of a new school year and one friend admitted that her stress level felt as if she were always being chased like a bear. That feeling or anxiety resonated with me − always thinking what’s next and approaching an already full life with such fervor can be exhausting and stressful. Rather than seeing life as a never-ending to-do list, I want to shift my thinking to be grateful for our life. We have so much to be thankful for − family, health, love.
I started to focus more on gratitude toward the end of the year especially after listening to this podcast while driving home from work. A.J. Jacobs goes on a trip to thank every person involved in producing his morning cup of coffee − I love the simplicity of this and how easily it can be applied to everyday life. I read Katherine Wintsch’s blog post to Stop and Smell the Gratitude after a particularly hectic Monday morning and it gave me pause to focus on what I was thankful for versus wanting what I don’t have. I suspect that Mike thought my texts that I was grateful for our family and him on a Monday morning when we had a sick child at home and busy work weeks were a bit unusual.
“The single greatest thing you can do to change your life today would be to start being grateful for what you have today.” − Oprah
- YOGA: practice hot yoga at least once/month. While Mike skied with the kids, I practiced daily yoga at Yogacara which was so peaceful and rejuvenating. I used to go to Corepower years ago and loved it, but canceled my membership when I switched workout routines. Yoga offers so many benefits ꟷ flexibility, detoxification, stronger immune system, better circulation system and much more.
“Yoga is a light, which once lit, will never dim.” − BKS Iyengar
- HEALTHY HOME COOKED FAMILY MEALS: make at least two new healthy family meals each month and become more proficient in the kitchen. Overall we eat reasonably healthy, but this can slide especially for the kids when the weeks are really busy. Hope to continue to meal plan on Sundays and incorporate a new meal every two weeks − something relatively easy, e.g., one pan chicken dinner or stuffed peppers
